Blu-ray or Blu-ray Disc (BD) has been described by many as the ultimate choice for High Definition entertainment.

Blu-ray is an optical disc format, which was developed jointly by members of the Blu-ray Disc Association, or BDA, this group include the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including, Pioneer, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, Apple, LG, Sony, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable rewriting, recording and playback of High Definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of conventional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single layer disc and 50GB on a dual layer disc. This additional capacity combined with the use of advanced audio and video codecs offers consumers an extraordinary HD experience.

Why is it called Blu-ray?

Current DVDs and CDs use a red laser beam that reads the data, Blu-ray Disc technology uses blue laser beam instead. This new blue laser has a shorter wavelength than a red laser, which makes it possible to read data with greater precision.
