Best Buy issues another HD DVD blow

28 Mar 2008 16:51

The store is offering more for SD DVD than HD DVD Toshiba's ill-fated high definition format HD DVD received another nail in its coffin this week as a major US retailer began clearing discs from its stores.

According to contactmusic.com, Best Buy's attempts to clear out its stock of HD DVD titles by offering them at a "fire sale" price were not successful and the store chain has now begun to remove the format from shelves.

The website reports that the space being cleared is being filled up by the increasing volume of titles being made available by Sony's format war winning Blu-ray and adds that extra standard DVDs are also being put out

Citing Video Business, it is reported that a store in Los Angeles saw stock numbers of Blu-ray titles increase by around 50 per cent on the previous week, although it was unclear where the abandoned HD DVD discs were sent.

Earlier this year, Toshiba announced it would drop the format, but did not rule out HD DVD living on as a high capacity storage solution.
