24 Dec 2007 16:20

Transformers The ongoing struggle for dominance of the home cinema market between the two new digital formats could be decided by the big Hollywood distributors, one expert has suggested.

According to a spokeswoman for Screen Digest, companies such as Warner Bros and Paramount are the people who hold the key to the success or failure of HD DVD and Blu-ray and the decision of could soon be taken out of the public's hands.

Helen Davis Jayalath, senior analyst at the audiovisual media analyst, said there was a possibility that some of the distributors could consider offering both formats but at the moment it was too close to call.

"There are so many variables that go in to this that it is simply too late for any one thing to happen that is going to push this entirely in one direction," she said.

Transformers director Michael Bay weighed into the debate earlier this month, suggesting that Microsoft was keen to see both formats fail so that they could push digital downloads.
