Cut-price HD DVD players: good or bad?

17 Dec 2007 18:15

The Venturer SHD7001 HD DVD player is set to be the entry-level model that targets the floating consumer unable to decide between HD DVD and its more popular rival Blu-ray.

However, with the cost of the player now expected to come in at around £199 and with the high-specification Toshiba HD EP35 selling for around £350, Digital Home asks where this leaves buyers.

"Having another format war over something as important as the first high definition disc format is as stupidly self-destructive for both sides as it is annoying for us punters," the site states.

However, earlier this month the arrival of the SHD 7001 was championed by TMCnet's VoIP and Gadgets Blog as a "sweet" deal that was all the "sweeter" when consumers considered a £50 add-on package that offered seven movies and a HDMI cable.

The package includes a copy of Ang Lee's Hulk movie and Wolfgang Petersen's Troy as well as a voucher that entitles the buyer to another five free discs.
