HD DVD could gain surprise victory over Blu-ray
26 Sep 2007 15:02A new report suggests that HD DVD is gaining ground on rival high definition DVD format Blu-ray, and that the conclusion of the ongoing battle may not be so predictable, Gizmodo reports.
Noting that HD DVD players have enjoyed more price cuts than Blu-ray, and that Paramount recently announced that it would release movies on only the former format, analyst JP Gownder said that Blu-ray has lost the last few rounds.
"Weakened by these developments, Blu-ray needs to offer a viable hardware model at the $250 (£125) price point by Christmas 2007," he said.
"The Blu-ray camp must also stave off further studio defections, and employ more aggressive promotional tactics to counter HD DVD's recent momentum. Failure to alter strategy would open up Blu-ray to a possible upset defeat at the hands of HD DVD."
A Forrester report suggests that sales for next-generation DVD players will not pick up speed significantly for the next 18 months. The high price point is an issue, it said.
