HD DVD 'will fight another day'

11 Dec 2007 17:30

Blu-ray is currently the favourite Reports suggesting Blu-ray has won the battle of the HD formats could be premature, according to Tech.co.uk.

The website claims that HD DVD has struggled to win the "hearts, minds and wallets" of gadget fans that go for the newest and most expensive technology before it is fully established but that this does not necessarily mean that Blu-ray will come out on top.

It is believed that the HD DVD Promotion Group has now focused on a sector of the market which the website calls "HDTV intenders".

Citing The Diffusion Group, the website states: "HDTV intenders are young singletons who plan to buy new technology when it gets cheaper and they know that it works properly."

It goes on to claim that a study conducted by the group revealed that 43 per cent of this group will opt for HD DVD during the next six months - with 27 per cent considering Blu-ray and the rest undecided.

However, it is also noted that this attempt to suggest that HD DVD is far from a troubled format could also be a simple attempt to garner support for a format which is otherwise significantly behind in sales.

With sales of the Blu-ray compatible Playstation 3 set to be high this year it is thought that HD DVD will be dealt another blow.
