Independent titles on HD from Amazon

04 Jul 2007 16:00

On-demand HD DVD film service from Amazon and Microsoft Just when it was beginning to look as though Blu-ray was the most popular kid on the block, Amazon has revealed that it is to offer high-def independent movies via its on-demand DVD printing service.

The online retailer will sell the films through CustomFlix Labs, and Microsoft will supply the necessary technology to package the discs and to produce extra features.

And what's more, processing fees for the first 1,000 films it accepts will be waived, the Associate Press (AP) reports.

Noting that 90 per cent of HD DVDs use Microsoft's encoding and interactive programs, Microsoft's Amir Majidimehr, corporate vice president for the consumer media technology group, said that the format's popularity could be increased thanks to Amazon's support.

He said: "We believe in this format. We're really committed to HD DVD."

When a consumer buys a film from CustomFlix, an automated process begins which immediately copies the film onto a disk and puts the packaging together.

It has not yet been confirmed how much it will cost to buy an on-demand HD DVD from CustomFlix.
