Microsoft reducing price of Xbox 360 HD DVD drive As the battle between HD DVD and Blu-ray continues to rage on, both camps are showing no sign of backing down as they strive for supremacy.

Microsoft is backing HD DVD, and is clearly keen for the second-gen format to beat its rival. As such, the firm has upped the stakes and reduced the price of its Xbox 360 HD DVD drive in the US.

The price cut was announced at Comic-Con International 2007 today (Thursday), and Microsoft revealed that as of August 1st this year the player will retail in North America for $179 (£87) - £20 less than the previous recommended retail price.

In addition, the company announced that consumers who purchase the player between August 1st and September 30th will get five free HD DVDs.

However, whether or not a similar price cut will be implemented in the UK market remains to be seen.

A Microsoft spokesperson told Pocket-lint.co.uk: "We currently have no announcements to make at this stage regarding a price cut of the Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive for the UK."
