'More work needed' on HD format

20 Sep 2007 17:02

Are you going to switch to the new High-Definition Format? More work is needed to convince consumers of the benefits of high definition (HD) DVD formats and persuade them to switch from the current DVD standard.

This is the view of the NPD Group, which found that take up of HD DVD players and content has been slow as a result of high prices and consumer caution over the ongoing format war between HD DVD and Blu-Ray.

Its survey reveals that just 11 per cent of HDTV owners plan to buy an HD DVD player in the next six months and 62 per cent are waiting for prices to fall before they make a purchase.

Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis, at NPD Group, said: "As HDTV penetration continues to grow manufacturers and studios will need to do a better job imparting the benefits of these formats to a consumer base that still reports a high satisfaction with the current DVD standard."

However said that falling prices and the introduction of dual-format DVD players which will play both HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs may help to boost sales in the future.

Many films are now being released in both high definition formats, allowing consumers to decide which one to back. Warner Home Video plans to launch the entire series of Harry Potter movies as a special box set in HD DVD and Blu-Ray.
