New Planet Earth HD DVD

17 Jul 2007 14:30

BBC series Planet Earth on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD Following on from the huge success of the Planet Earth HD DVD, the BBC series is to be re-released in the US with new narration.

Originally, the beautifully filmed documentary series was narrated by acclaimed broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough. However, when it was aired in the US on the Discovery Channel the narration was replaced with that of actress and conservationist Sigourney Weaver.

Released in April, Planet Earth proved to be the biggest selling HD DVD released so far, and now the second version is to be released on both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc, featuring Weaver's narration, High-Def Digest reports.

It is thought that the new version will hit the shops in the States on July 30th, priced at $99.95 (£49). The standard DVD version, with the Discovery Channel's narration rather than the Beeb's, is already on sale priced at $69.95 (£34).

The series has made a whopping $3.2 million (£1.5 million) in the US, following sales of 45,000 copies of the four-disc set. This equates to one copy for every five owners of an HD DVD player. Pretty impressive stuff!
