New high-def DVD format surfaces in China

17 Sep 2007 09:53

CH-DVD: HD DVD technology from China China has put pressure on the next generation DVD format race with the announcement of the launch of its own high-definition (HD) format.

The government-backed CH-DVD is a variant of HD DVD and, according to a report by itpro.co.uk, is "key to the development of the Chinese content industry".

It will also allegedly be instrumental in combating piracy, containing advanced copy protection securities.

Manufacturers OMNERC (Optical Memory National Engineering Research Centre) stated: "The emergence of CH-DVD as a high definition format integrating Chinese-owned intellectual property clearly demonstrates that a Chinese optical disc technology is already at the world-class level."

The company statement went on to say that it expected all related industries in China to make the transition from standard-definition DVD to HD DVD.

CH-DVD is based on HD DVD technology, which means the employment of blue-violet lasers rather than the red lasers currently used in DVD, according to dailytech.com.
