Paramount and DreamWorks backing HD DVD

21 Aug 2007 10:10

New HD DVD titles from Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation The HD DVD format got a bit of a boost yesterday (Monday) after Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation announced that they will be exclusively supporting it on a worldwide basis.

A number of Paramount Pictures' films have been released on Blu-ray, as have some DreamWorks films, but now both studios are putting their weight behind its rival.

Blades of Glory will be the first released exclusive HD-DVD title to be released, followed by summer blockbuster Transformers and family favourite Shrek the Third.

Paramount's chief executive officer and chairman Brad Grey commented: "I believe HD-DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount."

"We decided to release Shrek the Third and other DreamWorks Animation titles exclusively on HD DVD because we believe it is the best format to bring high quality home entertainment to a key segment of our audience - families," added DreamWorks' chief executive officer Jeffrey Katzenberg.

At present, Blu-ray is exclusively backed by more studios than HD DVD; Sony, Walt Disney, Twentieth Century Fox, Lions Gate Entertainment and MGM.
