Research group predicts end to format war

31 Jan 2008 17:22

The format war could be over this year A global technology research company has predicted that Toshiba's HD DVD format may be fighting a losing battle and that the end of 2008 could see Blu-ray emerge victorious.

SmartHouse News reports that Gartner predicts Blu-ray to claim the winning stake of the consumer market by the end of the year and will then be crowned as the next generation replacement for DVD.

The site states that Gartner analyst Hiroyuki Shimizu said this week that soon the "war will be over" despite moves by Toshiba to extend the HD DVD format's chances of survival.

"Gartner believes that Toshiba's price-cutting may prolong HD DVD's life a little, but the limited line-up of film titles will inflict fatal damage," he said.

The news is another blow to the troubled format which is still reeling from a report by US research company NPD Group that claimed weekly HD DVD player sales had dropped by 88 per cent in the week ending January 12th.
