Star Trek beams onto HD DVD

Leonard Nimoy as Spock in Star Trek Star Trek: The Original Series: First Season has been released on HD DVD, in a joint venture between Toshiba America Consumer Products and CBS Home Entertainment.

The popular sci-fi series is now exclusively available on HD DVD/DVD combo discs and comes in a ten-disc box set for a recommended retail price of $195 (£100)

As an added bonus for Trekkies, they will have the chance to send off for a free limited-edition Star Trek Phaser remote control which features sounds and light effects from the original programme, which will work with any Toshiba HD DVD player.

Louis Masses, director business development, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group, said: "HD DVD is taking The Original Series where no Trek episode has gone before.

"The leading-edge technologies in HD DVD players are taking Star Trek: The Original Series to a truly new dimension for fans. Partnering with CBS, we are excited to be bringing this landmark TV series into the homes of fans and to be developing a promotion that appealed specifically to the Trek fan."

The offer for the phaser-remote expires on February 29th, 2008.
