Toshiba HD DVD on "death watch"

15 Feb 2008 13:32

HD DVD is facing a tough time Toshiba could be considering the possibility of pulling the plug on its HD DVD technology, the Hollywood Reporter has suggested.

Despite no official announcement being made, the newspaper has cited "reliable industry sources" that it claims suggest Toshiba may be looking at ways of winding down the troubled format.

However, it notes that despite a number of movie studios and retailers announcing their support for Blu-ray, vice president of marketing for Toshiba's consumer products division in the US Jodi Sally has said the company is still behind the format.

"Based on its technological advancements, we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, given the value and consistent quality inherent in our player offerings," she said.

It has, however, been a poor start to 2008 for Toshiba's system as following the decision by Warner to release its content exclusively on Blu-ray, US rental group Netflix and UK retailer Woolworths both pulled out of stocking HD DVD discs.
