Toshiba price cuts "the swan song" for HD DVD?

15 Jan 2008 17:16

Toshiba is said to be struggling in the HD format war The announcement this week that Toshiba is to cut the prices of its HD DVD players has been seen by many experts as its last chance in the bid to win the format war.

According to Tech News World, the manufacturer's decision to cut the retail price of its entry-level HD-A3, middle-level HD-A30 and top-of-the-range HD-A35 units could be seen as the "swan song" for the format.

Adrienne Downey, a senior analyst with Semico Research, also told the site that the move looked like a desperate attempt by Toshiba to limit the damage done by Warner Bros' decision to publish its future releases on Blu-ray.

"This is [Toshiba] executives sitting down after the Warner announcement and saying, 'we need to do something, because we're losing money,'" he said.

The Daily Tech news website added this week that the firm had launched a two pronged attempt at damage limitation by drawing attention to upscaling capabilities of HD DVD players.

Jodi Sally, vice president of marketing at Toshiba's Digital A/V Group, said: "Our HD DVD players … enhance the picture quality to near high definition on legacy DVD titles by all studios."
