Universal to support Blu-ray

20 Feb 2008 13:14

The studio recently released Ridley Scott's American Gangster on HD DVD Following this week's announcement that Toshiba is to wrap up production of its ailing HD DVD format, one of Hollywood's biggest studios has announced it will support Blu-ray.

According to SmartHouse News, Universal Studios Home Entertainment (USHE) has said it will now make its back catalogue available in Blu-ray having been one of HD DVD's biggest supporters up until now.

The website states that USHE's announcement came "hours after Toshiba's official statement" and that Craig Kornblau, the company's president, has welcomed the emergence of one "clear" platform for the high definition (HD) format.

"While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalogue titles on Blu-ray," he said.

HD DVD's other supporters, including Paramount and DreamWorks Animation, have yet to make an announcement on their future HD plans.

Last year, Hollywood director Michael Bay announced that he would deny Paramount a sequel to his 2007 blockbuster if they failed to support Blu-ray - a statement he later retracted.
