1m Blu-ray discs sold in Europe

Over one million films have been bought on Blu-ray The total number of Blu-ray discs sold in Europe has surpassed the magic one million mark, the Blu-ray Disc Association European Promotions Committee has said.

According to the group, figures provided by Media Control Gfk International show that 73 per cent of the high definition movie discs sold on the continent for the year to date were in the Blu-ray format.

This figure relates solely to film discs. If game discs are included, than they figure actually sands at more than 21 million.

Frank Simonis, chairman of the Blu-ray Disc European Promotions Committee, believes that this data is a clear indication that shoppers prefer Blu-ray to rival format HD DVD.

He said: "This is an important milestone for Blu-ray disc in Europe and proves once again that whenever consumers have the choice they decide overwhelmingly in favour of BD.

"Early indicators show that the Christmas holiday season will be exceptionally good for Blu-ray disc across all categories from packaged media to standalone players and BD capable games consoles."

Year-to-date the best selling Blu-ray titles are 300 and Casino Royale, the latter being the biggest selling Blu-ray disc in the UK.
