Blockbuster opts for Blu-ray

19 Jun 2007 15:00

Blockbuster: HD DVDs or Blu-ray Discs? The debate over whether HD DVDs or Blu-ray Discs are the better option in terms of second generation DVD formats is still largely undecided, by consumers, retailers and distributors alike.

However, it is not undecided by everybody. Rental firm Blockbuster has decided to opt for Blu-ray, and has announced that it will be stocking the discs in all of its 1,450 stores in the US.

The chain has decided to go with the Sony-backed format in favour of HD DVDs - which are supported by Toshiba - because they are more popular with their customers, and because most movie studios (apart from Universal) are offering their films solely on Blu-ray.

Speaking to the Associated Press news agency, Matthew Smith, senior vice president of merchandising at Blockbusters, said: "The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing."

Around 250 stores will still stock both formats, but in a statement Blockbuster noted that rentals of Blu-ray discs are "significantly outpacing HD DVD rentals".
