Blu-ray backed by 2nd biggest retailer in US

Further support for Blu-ray player and Blu-ray Discs Blu-ray has received a bit of a boost this week, as Target Corp, the second largest retail chain in the States, has revealed plans to promote the second-generation format.

The retailer will begin stocking a Sony Blu-ray high-definition DVD player during the run-up to the festive season this year, as well as a number of Blu-ray discs, the Associated Press reports.

Target revealed that the Sony BDP-S300 will be sold in its stores from October for $499 (£250), and that Blu-ray Discs from three studios including Disney and Sony will be prominently displayed at the ends of aisles.

At present, Target stores do not stock any HD DVD players, although one such player is available via the retailer's website.

Commenting on the Blu-ray items to be sold through Target's stores, Brie Heath, spokesperson for Target, said: "We are not proclaiming one format versus the other as the preferred consumer technology, and software will continue to be available to our guests in both the Blu-ray and HD DVD format."

It is thought that Sony and Target will formally announce this decision later today (Thursday).
