Blu-ray beating HD?

13 Aug 2007 10:25

Blu-ray V HDDVD? It's always interesting to find out which why a retail war will go. Particularly when the products involved are so unbelievably amazing!

Blu-ray and HD have been pitted against each other in the battle for top-dog in the second generation DVD stakes, and both sides have claimed to be victorious in recent weeks for various reasons.

However, two troops from the Blu camp have stepped up and said that the players they are backing are the ones that consumers are showing the most love.

Abt Electronics and Ultimate Electronics have both said that although stand alone HD DVD players tend to be cheaper, stand alone Blu-ray Disc players are selling better - especially since several lower cost products have made their way onto the market.

John Abt, vice president of Abt Electronics, said: "With all of the introductions of Blu-ray product, we have seen more sales in BD than in HD DVD, because there are so many options now out for consumers," Video Business reports.

In addition, Bjorn Dybdahl, president of Bjorn's, commented: "We were seeing a 50/50 split in unit sales. That was primarily all three Toshiba players versus Sony's $499 (£250) players.

"If the Blu-ray group wants to put a death knell on HD DVD, then they need to get it everywhere very quickly."

Well, all we'll say on the matter is 'watch this space'.
