Blu-ray player shipments from Sony may increase

12 Jun 2007 16:45

Sony's Blu-ray Disc Players popularity soars New technology can be pretty incredible. As the years progress it seems to get bigger and better, or smaller and quicker. Either way, it also seems to get everywhere, so it should come as no real surprise to hear that Sony may increase the shipments of its Blu-ray Disc players by as much as 600 per cent this year.

The electronics giant has revealed that shipments from the US may reach 600,000 in 2007, compared to 100,000 in 2006, as the popularity of films only available on the Blu-ray format increases, Bloomberg reports.

Randy Waynick, senior vice president of Sony's US home products division, told reporters that shipments of Blu-ray players could well reach the 500,000 or 600,000 mark.

Speaking at a meeting in San Francisco yesterday (Monday), he said: "You'll see growth in multiples of five or six times," but added that "a lot of that will depend how competitive'' Blu-ray becomes.

And in reference to forthcoming Blu-ray disc titles, Mr Waynick said that 14 to15 of the top-20 films to be released this year will be made for the format. He added: "The movies are very compelling,'' although he did not reveal the titles of any of the films.
