Blu-ray popularity soaring thanks to PS3

05 Jul 2007 12:27

Blu-ray Discs sales rising thanks to the PlayStation 3 HD DVD has taken another blow in the battle for supreme second generation format this week, as Sony announced that its Playstation 3 console has helped boost sales of the Blu-ray Discs in Europe.

According to the company, Sony Pictures has sold 180,000 Blu-ray Discs in Europe since the launch of the PS3 in March this year, which represents a massive 1,000 per cent increase in sales.

Blu-ray sales contribute 67 per cent of the HD DVD market, and Sony Pictures has suggested that sales of its titles now account for 50 per cent of all Blu-ray Discs sold in the UK, Spain and France.

Matt Brown, executive vice president, international at Sony Pictures, said: "Our European Blu-ray sales increased more than 1,000 percent since the launch of the PS3 in March 2007, due to strong sales in the UK, France, Germany and Spain.

"This is extremely positive news not only for SPHE but for the European high-definition market as a whole, as it underscores the increasing consumer demand for high-definition content and the power of the PS3."
