Blu-ray popularity soars

29 May 2007 17:06

Over one million Blu-ray discs have been sold. In a demonstration of the huge popularity of Blu-ray high definition discs, more than one million of the little fellas have now been sold.

According to figures from the Blu-ray Disc Association, Blu-ray became the first HD format to sell more than a million discs, and achieved that milestone inside a year.

As well as this, Blu-ray discs accounted for some 70 per cent of the HD movies sold during the first three months of this year.

Projections also suggest that this trend is likely to continue into the future, especially considering that seven of the eight major film studios are releasing more and more bestselling movies on Blu-ray.

"Sales of Blu-ray disc titles have taken off since the first of the year," said the Blu-ray Disc Association's Andy Parsons. "It's exactly what we've said all along would happen - the strong support for Blu-ray among movie studio and equipment manufacturers means that consumers have more choices when it comes to players and titles."

Blu-ray is a format designed for both high definition video and high-capacity software applications. The discs can hold either 25 or 50 gigabytes of data.

Warner Home Video has just announced the release of TMNT Ninja Turtle Redux for both Blu-ray and HDTV this summer.
