Blu-ray sales 'will have a good year'
06 Mar 2008 17:27Following the death of Toshiba's HD DVD format, one expert has suggested that there is now nothing to stop the growth of Blu-ray.
According to a spokesman for Screen Digest, a group which analyses business in the global audiovisual market, Toshiba's withdrawal from HD DVD production has left no challengers to Blu-ray and this will mean significant growth for the format in 2008.
Richard Cooper, analyst at the company, said that Toshiba's decision left "a vacuum" open for those on a budget wishing to adopt high definition and now Blu-ray will move to fill this.
"While we're going to see fairly brisk [Blu-ray] sales to consumers who were waiting for the end of the format war [HD DVD owners] are likely to continue holding out for cheaper Blu-ray players," he said.
It has been suggested that HD DVD will continue to function in the market as a high volume storage capacity although Toshiba have yet to announce any solid plans for the format.
