Blu-ray streams ahead in Europe

Blu-ray has seen marked sales increases in Europe Total European sales of Blu-ray discs have surpassed the one million mark, the Blu-ray Disc Association European Promotions Committee revealed today.

The announcement comes as the gap between Blu-ray and its Microsoft-backed rival HD DVD continues to widen, with Blu-ray now accounting for 73 per cent of all high definition movie disc sales.

And with Blu-ray enjoying universal supported among the film, music, gaming and computer industries, the format looks certain to have secured the title of the number one high definition packaged media solution.

Furthermore, the one million sales count only includes movie titles. Factor in sales of Blu-ray games and the total number skyrockets to 21 million units, largely due to the so-called "Playstation effect".

Blu-ray disc movie sales last week enjoyed their highest weekly figures since the format was launched, notching up 66,000 separate units as a swathe of popular releases including Spider Man 3 and Die Hard 4 hit the shelves.
