Blu-ray winning the format war?

25 Oct 2007 13:07

Blu-ray could well be on its way to the top Will this format war ever end? It seems that there is a never ending battle raging between Blu-ray and HD DVD with each side sure that an end is in sight that will see them secure that eponymous victory.

However, new research seems to indicate that it's Blu-ray all the way as these second-generation DVDs are outselling their rivals by almost two to one.

The study, conducted by Home Media Research, a division of Home Media Magazine, shows that sales of Sony-backed Blu-ray Discs in the US from January 1st to September 30th this year totalled 2.6 million, compared to 1.4 million HD DVDs.

It's a bit of a blow for HD DVD innovator Toshiba and backers such as Microsoft but it should be noted that the stats don't include sales of the recently released Transformers, which proved to be the biggest-selling HD DVD to date.

And they could be cheered up by the opinion of some techy analysts who believe that exclusive releases on the format and additional studio support could help to boost HD DVD's position in the market.

Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Research, believes that the 18-month period of exclusivity for HD-DVDs by DreamWorks and Paramount should help to strengthen its position in the next three months.

"This definitely smooths out the edge that Blu-ray had in exclusive titles and it very much strengthens HD-DVD's hand in the fourth quarter," he said.
