Consumer technologies set for growth

17 Sep 2007 16:53

Home networks and High-Definition TVs to be more popular Consumer electronics for the "digital home", such as high definition (HD) TVs and home networks, will be the fastest growing consumer technologies during the next five years, according to a new study.

Based on a survey of nearly 60,000 consumers from the United States, the Forrester report suggested that the number of households setting up a home network will almost triple by 2012, while the number of consumers purchasing an HD TV will rise two-fold.

However, the report suggested that new growth in the video game consoles market would be slow, growing by only 14 per cent over the next five years despite the falling prices of next generation consoles such as the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360.

Despite the launch of the brand new iPod Touch, the research also suggested that growth of MP3 players will slow with consumers choosing to listen to their music via mobile phones.

A global study of the HD TV market carried out by Bharat Book Bureau research company forecast that 106 million homes will be equipped with high definition viewing by 2010, three times as many as in 2005.
