It could be too soon to trade up for HD High definition (HD) formats such as Blu-ray are the current talk of the home entertainment market, but standard definition (SD) DVD will be here for some time, it has been suggested.

The Arizona Republic reports that online DVD rental companies such as Netflix and Lovefilm are keeping the flame of the format alive in their popularity.

It is reported that in the US the DVD rental industry is though to be worth around $8 billion and fierce competition between the main companies is benefiting the consumer.

Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey told the website that it will be a while before HD catches up.

"It's still a DVD world and it will be for many years," he said. "We have 90,000 titles on DVD and about 7,000 choices for watching instantly on the personal computer."

Lovefilm claims to have the largest range of online DVDs available for rental in the UK at over 65,000 titles to date.
