DVD 'will live on as SD option'

07 Mar 2008 11:49

DVD players are not dead yet Despite the emergence of Blu-ray as the high definition (HD) winner of the format war, one expert has noted that DVD is far from dead.

According to Richard Cooper of Screen Digest, it will be some time before standard definition (SD) DVD players become obsolete because the general public will need time to adapt.

"We're certainly going to see DVD continue to exist as the cheap, standard-definition option for quite some years to come," he said.

He added that with consumers having built up "extensive DVD collections" there was little to suggest that Blu-ray would cause them to "bin" their collection.

Toshiba announced that it would pull out of the HD format war on February 19th when it confirmed it would no longer manufacture or develop HD DVD players.

Prior to this retailers such as Woolworths had announced that they would no longer offer HD DVD in their stores and Warner Bros opted to make all future releases Blu-ray exclusive.
