FireWire supports Blu-Ray products An important milestone in the development of the FireWire standard will be reached this year thanks to the launch of 1394 (FireWire) equipped Blu-ray disc players, the 1394 Trade Association said this week.

Many leaders in the electronics market have already introduced some pretty snazzy Blu-ray products which are FireWire equipped and HD-capable, including Samsung Electronics, Sharp Electronics and LaCie.

Consumers can use FireWire to transfer high-definition video to HDTVs or computers as Blu-ray drives record them from video and digital broadcasting sources. Many products aren't readily available but will be by the end of this year.

James Snider, executive director of the 1394 Trade Association, said: "Blu-ray is becoming an important piece of the high-definition architecture - and so is FireWire.

"The new 1394-equipped Blu-ray products deliver optimal recording and connectivity for the consumer and they provide another excellent example of FireWire's enduring benefits."

Blu-ray discs deliver high-definition, high-resolution images and high sound quality. Each disc has storage capacity of up to 50GB, and allows for playback, recording and rewriting of HD in all of the HD resolutions.
