HD DVD statement dubbed 'misleading' by Blu-ray group

16 Nov 2007 16:01

The Blu-ray backers are not happy with the HD camp A press release sent out earlier this week by the European HD DVD Promotional Group has been branded "misleading" by the Blu-ray Disc Association European Promotions Committee.

The statement, issued on Monday, November 12th, claims that HD DVDs have a higher attach rate (the average number of discs people buy for their players) in Europe than Blu-ray discs, citing figures from independent research group Gfk.

Alan Bell, chief technology officer, Paramount Pictures commented: "HD DVD not only offers all the picture and audio benefits of other HD formats, it also has the most affordable and feature-rich players on the market today. Unlike other HD formats, every player produced gives the consumer the same consistent HD performance and experience."

However, the Blu-ray camp has asserted that the figures should really be taken with a pinch of salt because they seemingly included the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. Now, its perfectly obvious that most gamers aren't going to buy the console to watch films on, which explains the marvellous HD DVD attach rate.

The group's Frank Simonis said: "The HD DVD group are distorting the facts and presenting information that is intended to portray a misleading message to consumers and the industry".
