HD panels are 'boosting consumer expectations'

High quality screens are easy to come by High definition quality and rapidly improving LCD and plasma televisions are bringing the level of user experience to a point where they have "transformed the shape of television", it has been suggested.

According to Harm van der Heijden, TV picture quality architect at NXP Semiconductors, this could lead to the industry needing to embrace better technology to keep ahead of the game, the Components In Electronics website reports.

"The basic problem is that high-definition TV pictures are so crisp, sharp and full of contrast that 20th century assumptions about suitable frame rates are no longer valid. We need to go for much higher frame rates than existing source material provides," he said.

He added that although static images allow for frames to be repeated in order to give a richer picture, moving pictures require more work with such improved frame rates.

"It's simply that as the overall picture quality improves, viewers are becoming much more critical of what they see," he concluded.
