Introducing HD VMD

11 Oct 2007 14:02

Could there be a new contender in the second-gen DVD market? VHS battled it out with Betamax, won, and was then superseded by DVD. Now, DVD looks set to be usurped by Blu-ray Discs and HD DVDs - but could there be another contender waiting in the wings?

It seems so. Because New Media Enterprises has announced that it has created a new HD format disc that it claims is a "low-cost true high definition solution".

The High Definition Versatile Multilayer Disc, or HD VMD, will have a 1920 x 1080i/p resolution and will allow for DVD up-scaling, meaning that users can watch their current DVDs on their high-def tellies.

HD VMD players are region free and have backwards compatibility, good news for those who want to keep hold of their DVDs, CDs and writable and re-writable discs.

A statement on New Media Enterprises' website reads: "HD VMD is a true HD format with 1920 x 1080i/p resolution, up to 40 Mbps bit rate playback, DVD up-scaling so users can watch their existing DVD collection and achieve premium picture quality through their HD TV monitors.

"The HD VMD player is suitable for playback on all HD-capable display devices and will support existing optical disc formats … HD VMD players also feature Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and all region codes for greater film viewing flexibility."
