Is it already "too late for Blu-ray"?

25 Mar 2008 17:10

"too late" for Blu-ray players? The emergence of Blu-ray as the high definition (HD) format of choice could only be a short-term thing if HD content becomes compatible with flash memory sticks, it has been suggested.

According to a spokesman for Lucasfilm's THX, home cinema fans could see the industry move towards a future where movies could be carried around "in a wallet" and content is downloaded from stores.

Laurie Fincham, chief scientist at the company, told Home Cinema Choice Magazine that it could already be "too late for Blu-ray" and added that "consumers will only become interested in replacing DVD when HD movies become available on flash memory".

He concluded that his own personal choice would be to not have to "take up shelf space with dozens of HD movies".

THX was established in the early 1980s by Star Wars creator George Lucas to ensure the third film in the franchise - Return of the Jedi - had the level of audio quality he required.
