LCD prices predicted to drop

28 Dec 2007 15:30

Cheaper technology could mean a more competitive LCD market The cost of producing liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions is predicted to drop by up to 16 per cent over the next three years, industry experts have predicted.

Reported by CENS, market survey institute Display Search claim that production costs of 40 inch LCD models will decline by 20 per cent a year and the costs of 32 inch models will continue to be stable throughout 2008.

This has led to brands outsourcing more models from specialised contract suppliers, the news provider reports. The proportion of LCD televisions outsourced worldwide is expected to increase to 35 per cent next year, compared to 22 per cent during 2007.

It claims that the majority of international brands will mainly use Taiwanese suppliers, with Qisda Corporation already receiving orders from Philips and Samsung, in addition to LG and Sony.

This week Sony announced it is to focus on LCD televisions, increasing its sales from 6.3 million to ten million over this fiscal year.
