Low-cost DVDs 'real competitor' for HD and Blu-ray

Some people will not feel the need to update, according to the study They may be battling against each other for the title of top second-generation DVD format, but it seems that both Blu-ray and HD DVD are underestimating their predecessor.

Yes folks, a new survey has indicated that the humble DVD player that you all know and love (or have loved, if you have already made the move to something more advanced!) could prove to be a bit of a stumbling block for firms who want to convert consumers to their products.

According to a report from Jupiter, a leading researcher in all things technological, shoppers may be content to upgrade their DVD players so that they look better and will not feel the need to buy either a Blu-ray Disc player or an HD DVD player.

Jupiter president David Schatsky noted that too much choice may prove to be a bit overwhelming for some and that it could well be the case that a lot of people will just stick to what they know to avoid confusion.

He said: "The abundance of material in such a wide variety of formats is going to make adoption of any single standard very difficult as consumers may well opt for a combination of what is already available."

Hmm, perhaps the best course of action would be to opt for a dual-format disc player?!
