Magic mark for Sony's Blu-ray Disc

Spider-Man 3 best seller Blu-ray Disc As the race for supreme second-generation high-def format disc continues to hot up, Sony DADC has announced that it has produced its ten millionth 50GB Blu-ray Disc.

The electronics giant revealed yesterday (Tuesday, October 2nd) that the disc, a copy of soon-to-be released action flick Spider-Man 3, was made at its facility in Indiana, US. It has three such facilities, the other two being in Japan and Austria.

Commenting on the production of the landmark disc, Bob Hurley, executive vice president of Sony's sales and marketing, said: "A year and a half ago, when the dual-layer 50GB Blu-ray Disc was introduced it caused a stir amongst the content creation industry.

"The exceptionally high storage capacity enables movie studios to present their titles in the very best high-definition visual and audio quality. Furthermore, these huge capacity
discs provide opportunities to load added value content, such as bonus material, interviews with the actors and production team, plus rich BD-Java-based interactivity designed to provide a complete entertainment experience."

To date, Sony's three Blu-ray Disc plants have collectively produced over 50 million 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray Discs at a rate of 21 million discs a month.
