NHK engineers get in a spin over new disc

30 May 2007 17:18

NHK's high-definition Blu-ray Disc Technicians at NHK in Japan have developed a disc that can be spun at a rate of up to 15,000 revolutions per minute (RPM).

Regular discs have a maximum speed of about 10,000 RPM. The disc is essentially a Blu-ray disc's recording layer, but without the plastic casing that keeps it rigid. It is only 0.1mm thick, and is not rigid enough to be used in a normal drive, Digital Arts reports.

Although it cannot be used in normal disc burners, the engineers have created the disc because NHK's high definition signals stream at 250Mbps, but standard Blu-ray discs can only record at 36Mbps.

The new discs will hopefully be able to record these broadcasts properly.

Blu-ray discs can store more data because of the shorter wavelength blue-violet laser that is used to read and write them. A single disc can store 25 gigabytes worth of data.

NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, was founded in 1926.
