New 200GB Blu-ray Disc by Hitachi Choosing between Blu-ray and HD discs is always going to be tricky. Don't worry, we're not trying to sway you one way or another, but we are doing our best to give you all the latest news. Because we're nice like that.

So, here's an interesting piece of news for you to chew over as you sit and ponder the options. Hitachi, one of the top Japanese companies, is planning to make an eight layer Blu-ray Disc capable of storing 200GB of data, according to a report from Nikkei.net.

The new disc, with its oodles of storage space, is due for release in 2009 and would have four times the capacity of the Blu-ray Discs currently on the market. These are currently capable of storing 25GB per layer, and have just two layers.

It would also be substantially more than HD Discs, which at present offer just 15GB per layer.
