Toshiba SD-L912A: Slim HD DVD rewritable drive for Computers and laptops Does it ever seem to you that new technology can go one of two ways? New TVs for instance, are often impressively big, while mobile phones are increasingly becoming ingeniously small.

If this hasn't escaped your attention, then you will undoubtedly be interested to hear about the latest piece of innovation launched by Toshiba, because the clever folk at the electronics company have created the first slim HD DVD rewritable drive available for notebook PCs.

Capable of reading, writing and rewriting to HD DVD-RW discs, the new SD-L912A drive can also read and write to HD DVD-R discs and standard DVD and CD discs.

Scott Maccabe, vice president and general manager of Toshiba's storage device division, said: "High-definition broadcasting and increasing consumer interest in high-definition televisions and camcorders are spurring demand for a high-definition experience across the entire PC and consumer electronics ecosystem.

"HD DVD is the best solution for transitioning to a high-definition world because it is compatible with existing DVD and CD technology. Our new rewritable drive will extend the functionality of HD DVD as a tool for creating and enjoying digital content in the mobile PC environment."

The SD-L912A will be showcased at Computex 2007 in Taipei, Taiwan, from June 5th to June 9th, and samples of the new drive are set to be shipped out in July this year.
