Next-gen DVD race entering critical phase
24 Sep 2007 17:52It appears that the ongoing battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD for dominance in the next-gen DVD format war is entering a decisive stage.
UK research firm Understanding & Solutions found that the next six months will be critical, with the possibility that the potential held by next-gen, high-def pre-recorded content will go unfulfilled.
In the war for dominance, it appears that Blu-ray is winning. Recently the video rental chain Blockbuster announced that it would opt for Blu-ray over HD DVD in its stores in the US, and there are more movie studios exclusively backing Blu-ray.
However, Paramount recently said it would exclusively back HD DVD and the fight looks set to continue for some time.
"Industry support for BD [Blu-ray] across content and hardware remains the strongest grouping and it is therefore the format with the greatest chance of market success, although its strength is being eroded," a report from Understanding & Solutions found.
"Continued competition between the two groups [Blu-ray and HD DVD] will lead to continuing confusion and uncertainty, and therefore delayed consumer purchase decisions."
