OLED 'not yet better than LCD and plasma'

25 Feb 2008 12:53

OLED TVs could have some way yet to go Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) televisions offer technology that is some of the "hottest" around but are not yet as high performance as their LCD and plasma predecessors, according to techradar.com.

In an article for the website, John Archer states that Sony is currently ahead of the game in terms of OLED TV with its XEL-1 model but adds that the unit will not be enough to dislodge many high definition screens currently available.

"Let's not forget that Sony's debut OLED model is only 11-inches across, only has a 960 x 540 resolution and costs more than many 42-inch plasmas do," Mr Archer states.

He adds that Sony has plans to build on its OLED technology and further down the line this could bring interesting results, however, innovations in LCD and plasma panels - as well as falling prices - mean that the market in 2008 will be as competitive as ever.

Last week a new survey from DisplaySearch revealed that LCD TV shipments had surpassed those of cathode ray tube screens for the first time during the fourth quarter of 2007.
