PS3 to have Blu-ray boost?

16 Oct 2007 11:25

Blu-ray could be about to get better on the PS3 It was only recently that gamers and Blu-ray fans alike were delighted by the news that the Play Station 3 console was reduced in price by makers Sony and now it seems that there could be more good news on the way.

According to media reports, a firmware update could soon be available for the PS3 that will provide a boost to its Blu-ray functionality - super for those of you expecting a pile of Blu-ray Discs for Christmas!

Video Business suggests that Don Eklund, Sony Pictures' executive vice president of advanced technologies, has commented that the next firmware release for the console will be designed to "boost Blu-Ray interactivity", meaning improved interactive features of Blu-ray discs on the PS3.

What's more, Mr Ekland revealed that he has high hopes for the HD format.

"The chances are pretty slim that high-def won't succeed," he said. "There are obstacles in getting consumers to appreciate it, but it's inevitable it will roll. Satellite and cable do a good job of indoctrinating people to high-def and by extension high-def packaged media."

It is thought that the next Playstation 3 firmware update will be available on October 30th.
