Samsung's Solid State Drive (SSD) to be used in notebook PCs. Are you on the lookout for a new PC or laptop? Fed up with the slowness of your current machine, need more memory, or need another computer because the kids are always using yours to look on Facebook?

Whatever the reason, news that Samsung has started mass producing a rather nifty solid state drive (SSD) for its notebooks may be of interest to you.

The electronics firm announced yesterday (June 25th) that it will has started production of a 1.8-inch - the first for the industry - designed for notebook PCs. The SSD will have a density of 64GB, consisting of 64 eight Gigabit (Gb) single-level cell flash memory chips.

Moreover, it will make use of 51nm process technology, which allows for the inclusion of much smaller components.

Jim Elliott, director of flash marketing for Samsung semiconductor, said: "We see sharply increasing interest in SSDs among OEMs worldwide amid a growing push to launch premium SSD-based notebooks, particularly in the ultra-mobile category."

As a general rule, SSDs have better reliability, boot times and application start-up times than hard disk drives, and they have the ability to improve battery life in notebooks by up to 20 per cent.

Samsung has announced that it has begun to mass produce a solid state drive (SSD), designed to be used in notebook PCs.
