Sony announces Blu-ray recorder releases

13 Sep 2007 09:23

New range of Blu-ray Disc recorders from Sony Technology giant Sony has said it is planning to launch four brand new Blu-ray optical disc recorders in Japan this coming November, in time for the holiday shopping rush.

Their announcement comes hot on the heels of recent gains made by Blu-ray's rival - HD DVD - in the fiercely contested high-definition DVD-recording market.

Both formats are vying to become the industry standard and HD DVD received a significant boost in August when Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation announced they would be distributing their movies exclusively on that format.

Sony, however, is banking on the release of its new recorders to restore Blu-ray's position as the dominant technology in the industry.

The new players will be capable of storing up to 16 hours of high-definition TV programming on dual-layer 50GB discs and will also have built-in 500GB hard drives. They are expected to retail for around 200,000 Yen (£860).

Plans to launch the recorders in Europe are reportedly being considered by Sony, though as yet no final decision has been made.
