Sony unveils four new Blu-ray recorders

17 Sep 2007 17:18

The BDZ-T50, BDZ-T70, BDZ-X90 and BDZ-L70: New range of Blu-ray records from Sony Sony has unveiled four new Blu-ray Disc (BD) recorders and announced that it will be dropping the standard DVD format from its video recorders, utilising BD in all future models, at least in Japan.

The new range of recorders, the BDZ-T50, BDZ-T70, BDZ-X90 and BDZ-L70 will all offer high picture and sound quality as well as long-duration recording. Making most of the extra storage capacity of BD, each disc will be able to hold up to 50GB of data, or 16 hours of high definition video.

The recorders also come with much larger hard discs this time around, allowing consumers to record up to 166 hours of video in full HD quality. The high-def machines will be released in Japan in time for the busy festive season, with prices depending on the size of the hard disc.

Analysts are estimating the total number of BD-DVD and HD-DVD recorder/players sold around the world will reach two million during the year ending March 2009, half the total of DVD recorders/players that are expected to be sold in the same period (four million).

With the major film studios bandying about in their support from one high-definition format to the other, Screen Media has estimated that both BD and HD DVD will be able to establish enough of an install base to co-exist in the foreseeable future.
