Texas Instruments get set for DLP HD launch

19 Sep 2007 17:06

Digital Light Processing (DLP) by Texas Instruments Texas Instruments has launched a new advertising campaign worth approximately £50 million as it prepares for the launch of DLP HD technology.

Digital Light Processing (DLP) is the method used in most rear projection (RP) HDTVs and it consists of approximately two million tiny mirrors that each reflect at different angles to create high definition pictures that include no motion blur, no burn-in and sharp pictures on the largest screens.

Doug Darrow, brand and marketing manager for DLP Products at Texas Instruments, said: "DLP technology has inherent advantages over other HDTV technologies. This new campaign sets out to help educate the consumer on those advantages so that they can make an educated buying decision for their HDTV.

"Research shows that when consumers research their buying decision they have a much higher likelihood to purchase DLP than other HDTV technologies."

Although HD enthusiasts are impressed by DLP technology, rear projection screens have fallen behind LCD and Plasma flat screens in the consumer race, leading some analysts to predict that RPTVs could soon be consigned to history.

According to research firm IDC, RPTV sales could be virtually non-existent by 2011 as flat panel LCDs continue to expand their share of the home entertainment market.
