The 500GB disc

10 Jul 2007 13:30

500GB of data to be stored on a single Blu-ray disc or HD-DVD Are you a big fan of all things technical? Do you love hearing about all the latest updates in the wonderful world of gadgets and gizmos? Of course you do. That's why you can't resist coming back to mangotango for another slice of the technological news pie.

Well, you'd better hold your plate out ready, because here comes another portion, and its piping hot!

Rather excitingly, a team of scientists from the Institute of Optics and Optical Technologies at the technical University of Berlin has developed a technique that can store as much as 500GB of data - 500!! - on a single Blu-ray disc or HD-DVD.

The technique, called Microholas, works by creating five clear layers on the disc, each capable of storing 100GB of data.

Speaking to PC magazine about the technique, the team said: "The implementation of micro-holography for digital data storage on a disk has the potential to become a major breakthrough in realising terabyte optical storage.

"The main advantage is that it takes bit-oriented storage to the third dimension. By using holographic multiplexing, tracks can be overlapped in the same volume. Very high storage densities of more than 100 bits per micrometer squared can be achieved in this way."

Currently, a Blu-ray disc can hold up to 50GB of data, while an HD DVD can hold just 30GB.
