Toshiba launches 3 new HD DVD players in Australia

17 Jul 2007 16:00

Good news to HD DVDs funs Today, high-definition fans, is a pretty special day - particularly if you are keen to get your hands on some HD DVDs.

That's because alongside its announcement that it has released two brand new HD DVD players into the Australian market, Toshiba has revealed that it has set up an HD DVD consortium with Microsoft and Intel along with movie studios Warner Brothers, Universal and Paramount.

Several major retailers in Australia, such as Myer, Harvey Norman and Clive Peeters, support HD DVD, although none have exclusive deals with the format. Despite the Blu-ray camp's claims of victory earlier this year, particularly after strong support from the likes of rental chain Blockbuster, the war between HD DVD and Blu-ray continues to rage.

As reported by Itwire.com, Toshiba Australia's information systems division general manager Mark Whittard believes that the battle is far from over, and that HD DVD can still come out victorious.

Commenting on the development of the HD DVD market, he said: ''All that press about Blockbuster and Blu-ray hasn't made any difference to HD DVD sales. This is going to be a very interesting next couple of years but HD DVD has a very strong future."
